You can get a hand-painted 2D anime film look from an AI image model without typing any studio’s name. On 2026-10-21 we ran one such prompt on two models inside Higgsfield. Nano Banana Pro charged 2 credits and Seedream 5.0 Lite charged 1 credit, and each returned the look on the first try. “Studio Ghibli AI” is the phrase people search for, so the studio’s name appears on this page only as that search term. We have no affiliation with the studio, and it has not endorsed anything here.

This page is for people who want the look on their own photo or on an original character. It is not a guide to restyling someone else’s face.

The status box at the top tracks “ghibli ai”, the short form of “studio ghibli ai”, in Google Trends US (weekly data). Interest peaked in the week of 2026-05-31. It stayed at or above 25% of that peak in 43 of the last 52 weeks. In the week of 2026-10-18 (week still running at fetch) it stood at 15% of peak, so the radar marked the look as fading at our 2026-10-21 fetch. The status rules behind that box are explained on the AI photo trend hub.

Which AI can make Ghibli-style images?

Both models we tested on 2026-10-21 can: Nano Banana Pro and Seedream 5.0 Lite each produced a hand-painted anime look from a plain description. ChatGPT started the wave. OpenAI’s new image generator set off a surge of these images in March 2025 (forbes.com, 2025-03-27). We did not test ChatGPT or Gemini for this page.

On Google US results for “studio ghibli ai” (2026-10-20), one-click generator sites hold positions 2 and 8. We tested none of these sites or the anime filter apps like them, and we recommend none. The route we can document is a credit-based image model with a prompt that names no studio. Our run is in the test section.

How to ghiblify a photo for free: limits not verified (checked 2026-10-21)

Start with ChatGPT or Gemini: both let you upload a photo and describe a style in plain words. Their free limits are not verified as of 2026-10-21, so check each app’s usage page before you plan a batch. We did not test either route for this page. We only link them: ChatGPT and Gemini.

Two vendors also market a free generator for this look, according to their own pages.

  • GoEnhance says its generator is free to try with basic features, and that high-resolution downloads and advanced tools need a paid plan (goenhance.ai, crawled 2026-10-20).
  • Dreamina says its free generator turns selfies or text prompts into this style (dreamina.capcut.com, crawled 2026-10-20). We did not test it, and its free limit is not verified as of 2026-10-21.

Use your own photo or an original character. Do not upload another person’s face without their consent. Our rules are on the content policy page.

Paying makes sense when you need several variations of one scene and a free route’s limit stops you. Credit prices are on the Higgsfield pricing page. What the free tier includes is on Higgsfield free.

Why does ChatGPT keep refusing my photo?

We cannot tell you which rule fired, but the 2025 thread in our crawl points to ChatGPT’s content policy on photos of real people. On 2025-03-27 a r/ChatGPT poster asked: “Why am I not able to hop on the Studio Ghibli trend? This is the same prompt and photo my friend used and ChatGPT keeps refusing to do it” (I#20, 50 comments). The same poster later wrote that it was “refusing to alter images with real people in them due to 'content policy'” (I#23, 2025-03-27). Another reply that day read: “I think they have disabled it! It’s not working with any style i try now..” (I#21, 2025-03-27).

NDTV reported that OpenAI said GPT-4o takes a “conservative approach” to mimicking individual artists' aesthetics (ndtv.com, 2025-03-29). We draw no conclusion about why the friend’s run worked and the poster’s did not. These threads are 2025 data, and we did not reproduce the refusal in 2026.

We publish no trick to get around a refusal, including the tips posted in that same thread. A refusal is the tool applying its policy. If a tool refuses your own photo, look for a tool whose terms accept own-photo edits. You can also work from an original character. We did not test a real person’s photo on any tool for this page.

Our test below leaves the studio’s name out because we do not imitate a named studio. It is not a way past a filter. It used a fictional character, and neither model refused it.

Our test: a hand-painted anime look on two models

Both models returned a usable 2D anime film still from the same prompt on the first try on 2026-10-21. One charged image per model is a single sample, not a ranking.

The prompt is below, verbatim. To use it, swap the cafe scene and the three identity details for your own subject. We ran it with one reference image of our fictional, AI-generated test character (see how we test).

Our log notes, made by eye, put the difference in finish. The Nano Banana Pro still has watercolor, painterly backgrounds and a softer palette, with a hillside village outside the window. The Seedream 5.0 Lite still has cleaner line art and a sharper cel-style finish, with farm fields outside. It also shows a lens-flare glare the prompt did not ask for, and that run cost half as much. Both stills keep the reference’s curly copper hair and round tortoiseshell glasses. The olive bomber jacket and a small hoop earring carry over too. These are our observations, not a scored drift test. The AI polaroid test found the same split between the two models.

One record note. The job record for G6a labels the model nano_banana_2, although we requested Nano Banana Pro. Every Nano Banana Pro job on 2026-10-21 came back that way, 10 jobs out of 10. We report the record and draw no conclusion from it.

The prompt names the parts of the look: hand-painted, 2D, watercolor backgrounds, clean line art, a pastel palette. It never names a studio, or any of its films or characters. The reference image plus the “keeps her curly copper hair, round glasses and olive jacket” clause is how we asked the model to hold identity. We ran no formal identity-drift test, so treat the identity result as an observation.

We ran both models on Higgsfield. We may earn a commission if you subscribe through the link below, and it does not change what we test. Details are on the affiliate disclosure page. To recreate the run, open Higgsfield (commission link), choose Image, pick Nano Banana Pro or Seedream 5.0 Lite, upload your reference and paste the prompt.

Higgsfield’s help center says “There’s no trial period” and that the free tier has a limited set of models (higgsfield.ai, fetched 2026-10-21). Whether that set includes these two models is not verified as of 2026-10-21. If you only want to try the prompt, a free chat tool is the cheaper first step. We have not tested the prompt there.

How to make a Ghibli-style AI video

Make the still first, then animate it with an image-to-video model. We have not run that step for this page, so we publish no clip and no cost: image-to-video from the G6 image is not tested.

Dreamina’s “Ghibli video generator” page says the tool offers text-to-video and image-to-video options (dreamina.capcut.com, crawled 2026-10-20). We did not test it, and its limits are not verified as of 2026-10-21.

If you try it, start from the still you like and ask for one small motion, such as steam rising from a cup. That order of work is not tested either. Add no copyrighted music if you post the clip, because clearing the audio rights is up to you.

Why is the Ghibli AI trend controversial?

Critics argue that AI images in this style undermine artists, and Interesting Engineering reported a backlash against OpenAI on 2025-03-28 (interestingengineering.com). The remark the coverage cites came from a documentary scene. In it, developers showed the studio’s co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, a crude AI-generated zombie animation demo for a possible video game (the-independent.com, 2025-03-28). NDTV’s headline quotes him calling AI-generated animation an “insult to life itself” (ndtv.com, 2025-03-27). AP dates the demo to 2016 and reports that he said he was “utterly disgusted” by it (apnews.com, 2025-03-28). That remark was about the demo, not about the 2025 trend.

Artists objected too. Karla Ortiz, an artist who was suing AI firms over copyright infringement at the time, criticized OpenAI’s use of the studio’s style without compensation (interestingengineering.com, 2025-03-28).

A short IP note, not legal advice. Copyright protects specific works and characters. A general visual look, such as soft watercolor backgrounds, is a style, and the law treats a style differently from copied film frames or characters. Where the line sits differs by country. Whether imitating a named studio’s style is fair remains an open debate.

Our approach follows from this. We describe the look in plain visual terms and keep the studio’s name out of every prompt. We do not copy its characters or film frames, and we do not suggest the studio approves of any result.

Questions people ask

Which AI can make Ghibli? ChatGPT started the trend in March 2025 (forbes.com, 2025-03-27). On 2026-10-21 we tested Nano Banana Pro (2 credits) and Seedream 5.0 Lite (1 credit) with a prompt that names no studio. Both gave a hand-painted anime look on the first try.

How to ghiblify a photo? Upload your own photo to a chat or image tool. Describe the look: a hand-painted 2D anime film still with watercolor backgrounds and clean line art. Our full prompt is in the test section.

How to make Ghibli-style AI video? Create the still, then animate it with an image-to-video model. Our own image-to-video run is not tested.

Why is Miyazaki against AI? In 2016 documentary footage, developers showed him a crude AI-generated animation demo. NDTV’s headline quotes him calling AI-generated animation an “insult to life itself” (ndtv.com, 2025-03-27; apnews.com, 2025-03-28 for the 2016 date). The remark predates the 2025 trend.

Is it legal? No single answer applies. Copyright covers specific works and characters more clearly than a general style, and the law differs by country. This is not legal advice.
